Playing Catch Up!

Its time to catch up on some photographs I've had waiting to be downloaded for a few weeks.Dsc01581

This lovely tea-cosy was a gift from Lynne (seen below on the left).Dsc00005 It was a present for my new "working at home" environment together with a packet of "Happiness Tea" which is fabulous and smells wonderful as an infusion of hibiscus flower, rosemary and cardamon pods from a company aptly named Today Was Fun! Thanks Lynne!!!!

The photograph of Lynne and myself was taken on the top of Ben Lomond which we climbed walked up a well trodden path on the bank holiday weekend.Dsc00007 As you can see the weather was fantastic, and so was the view towards the rest of the Highlands. Its funny, I lived until I was 21 only a few miles from Loch Lomond and could even see the top of "the Ben" from our school classroom but in all the years of looking at it and driving past I'd never been to the top so for me it was a personal achievement - as was completing the Liverpool Ladies 10K run yesterday! My legs are still feeling that one....

Dsc01337 And just to finish, here's a random picture of Wally sleeping - yes he's actually asleep (see, his eyes are closed). I'm not sure if I've posted this before but I love it all the same. He's such a cutie, even if his hairs get everywhere and we spend all of our time hoovering them up!

One-skein Secret Pal Questionnaire

Hi River Knitter!

1. Which yarn is most like your personality (you can be specific or general with your answer- brand, type, color, fiber, whatever)? This is a hard question to answer. I guess it has to be organic or from a sustainable source since that's my field of interest or as close to natural state as possible, preferably dyed with natural dyes - interesting but not vibrant. I like to blend in more than be the odd one out. It would be a mixture of silk and merino with something Scottish in the blend (Shetland perhaps) - classy, soft but with a sense of place.

2.        What is your favorite color yarn to knit/crochet with? I've just gone through a bit of a pink phase which I'm trying to move away from but I still love purples, lilac etc. I love neutral colours and my least favourite colour is moss green!

3.        Have you ever used variegated, or magic, yarns? Yes, I love the effects you get with variegated sock yarns although I'm still to finish my first pair of socks a year since I first started them!

4.        Do you tend to favor certain fibers when choosing yarns? I only use natural fibers and don't like novelty yarns like Fizz or eyelash yarn. I'm not too keen on knitting with cotton but would like to try Soya/ hemp/ banana fiber.

5.        Do you prefer to work with center-pull or traditionally wound balls of yarn? I'm not bothered either way.

6.        Have you ever worked with organic yarns or are you interested in trying them? No but I would like to try some.

7.        How many and what projects have you made in the last year? Not as many as some. I'm a bit slow and don't want to see knitting as a competition.

8.        Will you be knitting any gifts this year? Probably at Christmas.

9.        What is your favorite one skein project? I've got a copy of "One-skein Wonder" pattern but haven't got round to it yet! I would say scarfs or hats for a quick present.

10.    How much yarn do you have in your stash and how do you store it? Two large plastic containers full. I recently sorted it all out so I could see what I had! I've got almost as much spinning fiber too stored in a large basket box with a lid. Mind you when I see what others have my stash could almost be described as modest (ha, ha)

11.    Do you have a yarn in your stash that you love so much you can never use it or part with it? Hand-dyed cashmere sock yarn - it seems too extravagant to make a pair of socks with it!!

12.    Do you knit less or differently in the summer? Probably less as I'm out more but in the UK its never too hot to knit!

13.    Do you belong to any knitting groups (online or offline)? The North Cheshire Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers who meet once a month.

One more question from me - any yarns that you'd love to try but can't get access to in the UK? I'm not sure? There are so many lovely American yarns. Most are available through the internet but I would say that I'd like to try anything which is special to you!

Weaving not Knitting!!

Well, the title says it all - I've finally started weaving!

Dsc01557 Yes, my Ashford Knitter's Loom arrived in the post the other week (love the pink carry box) but I didn't have anytime to do anything with it (or the knowledge) so on Monday night I went with Janet and Shirley to Averil's for a lesson in warping - yes, of course our spinning guru can weave as well as everything else fibre related!

Dsc01558 OpenDsc01559 and folded up.

Direct_warping_2 Direct warping in Averil's studio and the loom ready to weave.....Stuff_005_1

And finally me at the loom (a bit blurry but then these pictures are from my mobile phone camera!!)Me_weaving.Weaving Weaving_close_up Samples of weaving - ok its not great but its my first attempt. More details on the yarn when I get back home (at work in Wales at the moment). The only problem was of course the distraction caused by Guss - Averil's cat showing off his (rather large) tummy!!Posing_guss

Being elsewhere

I've started my new job now which is great (this is already the 3rd week) but it does mean that I'm knitting very little and of course blogging even less. I'm having to learn a new computer programme which is really frustrating. After 12 years of using one CAD programme I'm finding it difficult to adjust plus I'm stressing about not being efficient and whether or not my new boss is happy with my work!

I'm definately a "glass half empty" kind of person - my theory is that if you expect the worse you won't be surprised when it happens...........not very healthy I know.

Anyway I don't want to give up blogging completely, especially when a few of my favourite bloggers are taking a break so instead I may have more "pictureless" posts as I find downloading pictures and looking for links is what takes me so long. Plus I've had thoughts on why I want to blog and one reason is simply to journal my knitting progress but also to put into writing my thoughts - something I haven't done to date so I'm not going away completely, probably just changing the way I blog.
